2010 saw a raft of new fitness crazes hit the UK, including boot camps and the introduction of outdoor gyms and by the look of it 2011 is set to be just as exciting. Experts at David Lloyd Leisure have put forward their predictions for what 2011′s trends
Rob Beale, Group Health and Fitness Manager at David Lloyd Leisure says: “Trends in the fitness industry are always changing as new research and new products come on the market. 2011 is going be even better with new classes starting and more of a focus on children’s fitness, as we all work together to improve the health of the nation and get people active.”
So, can you see any of these trends circulating at a gym near you?
TREND 1: DEMAND FOR CHILDREN’S FITNESS PROGRAMMES
Improving children’s fitness has never been more important with childhood obesity increasing at an alarming rate. Health and fitness operators will look to provide better facilities for children and look to educate them and their parents better says Rob Beale. He adds: “We think this will be a popular trend across the health and fitness industry as they play their part in getting the nation fitter. We plan a huge shake up of facilities for young people at our clubs.” David Lloyd Leisure will be changing their current offerings for 11 to 16-year-olds, providing them with more options to join group exercise classes and workout unsupervised in the gym.
TREND 2: TRIATHLON PARTICIPATION
Triathlon is Britain’s fastest growing sport and David Lloyd Leisure predicts an increase in triathlon based activities, with more people swimming, running and cycling than ever before. Triathlon clubs will be run in all David Lloyd clubs offering fitness tips as well as an opportunity to take up the sport in a group of like-minded individuals.
TREND 3: INNOVATION IN EXERCISE CLASSES
Brand new classes will be introduced across the industry to build on the success of 2010’s launches, which included JUKARI Fit to Flex and several celebrity endorsed classes. Indoor group cycling will be transformed by the introduction of a new class – Adidas Zone Cycling, which is inspired by Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton. Exclusively at David Lloyd Leisure, Adidas Zone Cycling will take you on a journey around The Velodrome and will get your heart pumping. Rob Beale says: “We pride ourselves on offering the most engaging and exciting classes for gym goers and we can’t wait to introduce Adidas Zone Cycling to David Lloyd Leisure members. It is a fun and energising workout.”
TREND 4: DYNAMIC USE OF EXERCISE EQUIPMENT
Health clubs will also be looking at creating new programmes for their member’s favourite pieces of equipment, such as the ViPR and Power Plate. David Lloyd Leisure will introduce bikini workouts and tennis-specific programmes to keep their members motivated; allowing them to target different parts of their body at different times of year.
TREND 5: INJURY AND SPORTS MEDICINE FACILITIES
David Lloyd Leisure also predicts that more health clubs will affiliate themselves with injury specialists and sports medicine professionals, such as Pure Sports Medicine, to offer members an extra service and help members to make the most of their time at the gym. Patients can learn to improve their running technique, recover from a sporting injuries and get nutritional advice, all of which can benefit their trips to the gym, aid weight loss and improve fitness.
